Happy Thanksgiving Eve!
THANKSGIVING: Surviving The Relatives
Hosting family this Thanksgiving? You’re not alone. AAA reports that millions of people will travel to visit family between Thanksgiving and the end of the year. That can only mean one thing: millions of holiday hosts under pressure. Here are a few tips to help you survive family this Thanksgiving:
- Remember this mantra: “It won’t be
perfect.” Not the food. Not the kids’ behavior. Not the adults’ behavior. It’s
family. There will be annoying relatives, destructive children, over-imbibers,
and picky eaters. So, don’t get disappointed when you don’t pull off the perfect
family gathering. - Hide the breakables: Child-proof your
house if there are pre-schoolers and toddlers visiting. Or, tipsy Uncle
Eddie. - Stock up on food items for young
guests: Like apple juice, peanut butter and pasta. If you’re a guest, offer
to pick up food your kids can’t live without. - Create a kids’ hangout area: Have a
place to keep their “stuff.” Suggest that the kids bring along a favorite game
or movie. - Get everyone out of the house: No one
will get on each other’s nerves as much if they’re not confined to small spaces.
Send them outside to play touch football before dinner if it's not too
cold. - Set ground rules: Like, “No food on the couch,” “No
teasing the dog,” and “No disciplining anyone else’s kids.” - Check emotional baggage at the door:
The holidays are not the time to air grievances. (TakingTheKids.com)
