The Pickaway County Sheriff's Department reported at about 6:20pm Monday that 40-year-old Zachary Neff was under guard at Grant Hospital in Columbus, awaiting surgery on an ankle gunshot wound he received from deputies.
They had responded to a 911 call from a woman at 23799 State Route 207 near New Holland. The tenant said Neff had made threats, brandished a firearm, and later fired shots, and that Neff had left her home and headed to his own behind it.
The Pickaway County Sheriff's Department reports that Neff yelled at approaching deputies from across a pond, and then fired a pistol at them. They returned fire with shotguns, and Neff was struck in the abdomen and ankle with buckshot.
The department received search warrants for the tenant house and Neff's home, and is being assisted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification & Investigation and dive teams.
Neff has been charged with attempted murder and felonious assault of a peace officer, and discharging a firearm while intoxicated.
