Slow starts in each half were quickly overcome once Westfall and Adena shook-off jitters, as the Mustangs used good shooting from the floor and the foul line in their 59-48 win over the Warriors Tuesday in Division 3 Sectional Semifinal action at Waverly.
Neither team scored until 3:52 left in the first quarter and Adena didn't score until 3:10 left in the third quarter, which played a role in their falling into a hole too deep to dig out of.
Adena saw a lead of 8-1 to start, vanish to 13-9 after one quarter and Westfall led 22-20 at half. The Mustangs built leads of anywhere between 7 to 12 points in the second half. The last time the Warriors were close, was at 40-34 midway into the fourth period. Adena connected on 5 of 6 trips from the field, but could not stop Westfall on their offensive end.
6'5 senior Alek Stonerock led all players with 24 points/10 rebounds, while Cody See added 13 points, Doug Hardin 9 and David Robinson 8 in the win.
The Warriors saw freshman Jonathan Thomas and senior Michael Bryant lead their effort with 14 points each. Ethan Sheppard and DeVante Nesbitt each added 8 points.
Westfall was 19/37 from the field for 51%- including a chilly 3/16 from the three-point arc. Adena was 20/45 for 44%- including 4/14 from the arc.
A big factor was the trips Westfall cashed-in on at the charity stripe, where they were 20/25. Adena was 4/4. The Mustangs also won the rebounding battle 22-15.
Westfall improves to (7-16) and plays Piketon at 5pm Saturday for the sectional title in a game to be broadcast on 94 Country WKKJ, right after the Zane Trace championship game in Athens.
