Despite starting the game only shooting 8% from the field, the (22-2) Adena Lady Warriors will make their first trip to the Sweet 16 since 2001 after beating Ironton 41-28 Sunday in the Division 3 District Championship.
Trailing 5-2 after the first quarter, Adena went on an 8-0 run to begin the second quarter for a 10-5 lead. It was all Lady Warriors from there-on.
Adena got a big game out of 5'8 senior Natalie Cooper, who was one rebound away from a double-double with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. Jenny Grigsby and Alyssa Kennedy added 8 points each, with Kennedy pulling down 8 rebounds.
For (20-6) Ironton, Lexi Barrier led the way with 11 points.
Adena shot 43% from the floor going 18/42 including 4/7 from the free throw line. Ironton was able to stay in the game from the charity stripe shooting 11/14 for 78%. From the floor Ironton was only 8/33 for 24%.
Adena will play Beverly Fort Frye in the Logan Regional Semifinal Wednesday 3/6 at 6:15pm with WKKJ airtime at 6pm.
The second semifinal involves Fairland vs Johnstown Monroe. The gym will be cleared between those two semifinal games, according to site manager Ron Janey.
