In what has been one of the most competitive SVC volleyball seasons in recent memory, fans have good reason to believe the conference teams could make a long tournament run.
As the curtain came down on regular season SVC play Thursday, it was yet another night of how that balance was showcased. Third place Adena, beat conference champ Westfall in five sets at Frankfort 25-21, 18-25, 25-22, 19-25, 15-9, as the Warriors finish the season having beaten the top three SVC teams in-a-row.
Unioto and Huntington concluded their league seasons with straight set wins and Zane Trace went four to top a pesky Piketon squad.
In conference play this fall, Westfall won the championship followed by Unioto, Zane Trace and Adena tied for third, then Huntington, Piketon, Southeastern and Paint Valley.
In the tournaments, which start the week of October 14th, #2 seed Unioto and #4 seed Zane Trace start-out in separate ends of the Division 2 Sectionals, but could meet each other for a district championship at Southeastern High School, with only one D-2 winner this year headed to the regionals in Wilmington.
Division 3 has probably the best road for SVC teams, as three district champs will go to the Sweet 16 at Logan. Westfall, Adena, Huntington, Piketon, and Southeastern are the D-3 teams. #1 seed Westfall, #2 seed Adena and #4 seed Huntington are all in separate brackets for the sectional and district, and could not face each other until the regionals. If such a progression played-out, Adena and Huntington could meet in the regional semis with Westfall in the other semi against the winner of the East District. Don't overlook Piketon, as they have played some of the top SVC teams tough this year, including a five-set win against Huntington. Southeastern is also more than cabable of pulling-off an upset of the higher seeded teams, after coming through the SVC "meat-grinding" schedule.
Paint Valley is the lone Division 4 volleyball team in the post-season. Despite their (7-14) overall record, they have been battle-tested in probably the best volleyball conference in the Southeast District, which could very-well help them on a nice tournament run.
The sectional tournaments will again see the highest seeded teams hosting matches, then going to the neutral sites for district tournament play.
Broadcast coverage of volleyball tournament action on 94 Country WKKJ and IHeart Radio gets underway with district semi-finals the week of October 22nd.
