Higher assessments are likely along almost two-dozen county road ditches.

Property owners that live along 21 ditch-lines in Pickaway County are likely to be paying more for their tax assessments to maintain them.

Pickaway County Deputy Engineer Chris Mullins says current assessments on these ditches are based on 20 to 30-year-old construction costs, which means much of the more in-depth maintenance has been put off for several years due to large expense. The cost to maintain ditches along Pickaway County roads continues to go up, to the point where county officials say they will likely have to increase the tax that pays for this.

Pickaway County Commissioner Glenn Reeser says a June 7th hearing is being planned where property owners along these ditch-lines will find out what needs to be done. Owners will get the chance to respond, and at the end of the process, the commissioners will decide whether to accept the engineers recommendation.

Deputy Engineer Chris Mullins says the proposed increase in property assessments does have a limit, saying the assessment can not increase by more than 20% maximum of the base costs. The assessment usually is based on 2.5% to 5% of that base cost.

T
he public hearing will be at the Pickaway County Service Center at 8:30am June 7th. Impacted property owners will be notified by mail.
