The agreement stems from an incident in which a homosexual student was beaten at school.
The Unioto School Board has reached an agreement with a homosexual teen who was beaten by another student in a classroom while others watched. Last October, the incident involving Zachary King, formally Zachary Huston, was captured on a student's cell phone video camera.
Shortly after, the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio stepped in to represent the student who, the organization says, was assaulted because of his sexual orientation.
At the Thursday school board meeting, board members agreed to an out-of-court settlement with the ACLU of Ohio, King, and his mother, Rebecca Collins.
The terms include: $20,000 compensation to King, reimbursement of King's medical expenses (not to exceed $10,000), and $5,000 to the ACLU for King's legal fees.
It also calls for the school to provide mandatory in-services to staff on relating with students of all sexual orientations and dealing with bullying.
