The week-long deer-gun hunting season begins Monday morning at sunrise across Ohio. John Windau, of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife, expects as many as 85,000 deer to be taken by the 420,000 hunters who'll be out this week.
Deer-gun season is a big deal in Ohio; Windau says hunters contribute $266 million to the state's economy each fall through the purchase of fuel, food, lodging and equipment. The white-tailed deer is Ohio's most popular game animal.
It's also a dangerous time of year, with the expectation that there will be injuries and even deaths. Windau reminds hunters to wear blaze orange and to always keep an eye on what's around their intended target. In addition, hunters who are in tree stands should consider wearing a safety harness in case they fall.
The deer-gun season runs through Sunday, December 2, and includes an extra weekend of hunting December 15-16.
