A record number of new companies opened up shop in Ohio during 2012. The Ohio Secretary of State's Office reports 88,068 new business filings.

"More companies choosing to do business in our state helps grow our economy and increases job prospects for people across Ohio," Secretary of State Jon Husted said.

Husted also noted that more than 2.1 million new businesses have filed with the state since Ohio officially became a state in 1803.

2012 was the third straight year to show growth. In all, the number of new companies in Ohio has grown 16.5 percent from 2009 to 2012.

Though the most visible role of the Secretary of State is that of chief elections officer, the office is also the first stop for individuals or companies who want to file and start a business in Ohio.

"The things that we have done to try and get Ohio moving in the right direction are exceeding other states. That's a reason for optimism in Ohio," Husted said.

Filing as a business in Ohio does not guarantee the company will begin operations, be profitable or create jobs.
