After some debate the ball fields at Bristol Park will be restricted to youth league softball.
The ball diamonds at Bristol Park in Waverly will be sanctioned solely for youth league softball play. Waverly Council members have decided to move forward with the installation of a permanent fence for the diamonds used by the Waverly Girls Youth League.
The decision was met with resistance by members of the Pike County YMCA at a meeting prior to Tuesday's council meeting. The YMCA has 35 adult leagues which were also using the field and were angered that the city was considering putting up a permanent fence because the field would be too small to accommodate adult league play. The ball fields were originally created for use by the youth league.
Waverly Mayor Greg Kempton and members of the YMCA have met with Waverly City Schools regarding the use of the old East School property for adult softball fields.
The Waverly City School Board approved the use of the property and Kempton says the Village is willing to fund the placement of backstops for the field with labor provided by the parks department.
