COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) _ The federal government watches out so there's no falling back for Ohio's growing population of bald eagles. That means checking out proposals for new houses and businesses so the projects won't threaten nearby eagle nests.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is currently monitoring plans for a 116-acre limestone quarry near eagles that have been nesting at least three years in Pickaway County. Agency biologist Megan Seymour says the quarry company may be asked to give the birds a large buffer zone.
The president of Melvin Stone says the firm will abide by whatever the government recommends.
Bald eagles went from endangered to the less serious ``threatened'' in Ohio five years ago. Nearly 300 nests were reported in the state during 2011.
