Next step includes launching the capital campaign
Historic Chillicothe Inc. has completed all initial stabilization, roof repair and building security work on the Carlisle Building.
The Engineering firm of Shelly, Metz, Bauman and Hawk of Columbus designed a steel beam reinforcing structure that will permanently support new masonry walls in the rear of the Carlisle Building. Clean out work and construction of both a permanent structural supporting system and interim weather protection work was completed by Utmost Renovation, also of Columbus, a firm that specializes in damage and structural repair projects.
Utmost Renovation also installed a replacement roof support system to carry the load of a portion of the roof in the area of the partial collapse that occurred in April, 2011. A temporary weather enclosure was constructed over the damaged area in the rear of the building.
Additionally, the Precision Slate and Tile Roofing Company of Columbus placed new roof sheeting over the damaged area and installed a new rubber membrane.
Following completion of the stabilization and roof repair work an HCI volunteer crew replaced broken glass windows and secured all openings in the building. Another volunteer crew will be preforming a general cleanup of the interior during the coming week.
Schooley Caldwell Associates, a Columbus architectural firm nationally known for their historic preservation work will re-inspect the Carlisle Building during the first week of March and begin work on preliminary plans for permanent repairs in the portion of the building that was damaged by the partial collapse. Schooley Caldwell has been the lead architect for several state capitol buildings and in Ohio the firm’s projects include restoration of Ohio’s Capitol building, the Thomas J. Moyer Justice Center and the Columbus Museum of Art.
During the next 60 days, HCI will be making further announcements regarding the Capital Campaign Schedule to raise funds for the complete restoration of the exterior of the Carlisle Building.
The initial annual meeting of Historic Chillicothe, Inc. is scheduled for Thursday, February 23 at 7pm. The meeting will be held at the Ross County Historical Society, located at 45 West Fifth Street, Chillicothe. All annual meetings will include an educational program. The inaugural speaker will be Jeffrey McNealey. Mr. McNealy is an attorney with Porter Wright in Columbus. He is a lifelong preservationist who has donated his legal and development skills to many preservation projects. He is past president of both the German Village Society and the Columbus Historical Society. Mr. McNealey resides in German Village today where he has renovated several historic properties.
The public is invited to participate and become members of HCI. Annual dues begin at $10 per person and membership will be offered for 2012 at the meeting. Upcoming volunteer opportunities will be discussed.
