Chillicothe shows its history for Ohio's 2009 birthday.
The history of Ohio's early days comes to life during Statehood Day Celebrations this weekend in Chillicothe.
It starts Saturday morning with the Kiwanis Prayer Breakfast, then migrates to activities at area museums, includingAdena Mansion & Gardens, Ross Historical Society and Lucy Webb Hayes House.
Tom Kuhn of the Historical Society says they will feature five new exhibits.
Teresa Sparks of the Adena Mansion & Gardens says they will feature something different this weekend- a drama- that shows Thomas Worthington's struggle for Ohio statehood. He was crucial in Ohio becoming a state, serving as a governor and U.S. Senator.
The Lucy House features exhibits for the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, including a local man dressed like legendary pirate Jean Lafi. The French pirate who helped the Americans in the War of 1812- which celebrates its 200th anniversary this year.
The Statehood Day Breakfast will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church on Main St., Saturday. Tickets will be available at the door for $8.
An award tied-in to statehood day celebrations, this year's recipient of the Chillicothe Kiwanis Statehood Day Achievement Award is a Ross County physician.
Dr. John Gabis, medical director for Ross County Family Medicine, Adena Health Systems, was selected by the Kiwanis for representing the "SPIRIT OF OHIO" through his community service and humanitarian deeds.
Dr. Gabis helped initiate the Ross County Drug Abuse Prevention Coalition which works with law enforcement, physicians and pharmacists to focus on the serious drug problems in Ross, Pike and Scioto counties.
