Building codes need to change to improve stair safety, and make falls less common.

A new study on child home safety, shows that injuries caused by falls from stairways are all-too-common, and among children younger than one year, one in four was injured while being carried by an adult.

Dr. Gary Smith of Nationwide Children's Hospital says a bigger even problem may lie in current building codes and how stairs are being constructed. Two out of three homes can't accommodate a wall-mounted gate at the top of the stairs.

A little good news though; a decrease in the use of rolling baby walkers has helped the number of injuries inch downward.
