A safety policy will limit the number of narcotics/controlled substances prescribed to patients.

Beginning April 2nd, Emergency Department physicians at the Adena Medical Center will limit the number of prescribed narcotics and controlled substances given to patients as part of a new patient safety policy. Patients who visit the ED for non-emergency chronic pain conditions and any patient returning for refills controlled substance prescriptions will be given a non-narcotic or non-controlled substance medication.

Only a patient who arrives at the emergency department with acute pain will be given narcotic or controlled substance medications in a limited dose - provided the attending physician believes they are medically indicated.
