People should start getting their colon checked at age 50.
Colon cancer is the third most common cancer among men and women in the U.S., however, Dr. Michael Fealk with Adena Medical Center, says it can be detected early or prevented in most cases with appropriate screenings.
Dr. Fealk says men and women should get a colonoscopy at age 50. He says those with a family history of colon cancer should schedule a screening much earlier than age 50.
The Colon Cancer Awareness 5K Walk/Run will be held on Saturday, April 28th, in Yoctangee Park. The race starts at 10am, registration at 9am in the Easter Seals Shelter, and the pre-registration deadline is April 6th. For more information, call Kim Buchanan at 779-8307.
