Chieftains score 22 unanswered points for second win in three weeks
Logan’s Isaac Schmeltzer scored three times and carried the ball 27 times for 162 yards in a 28-7 win over Chillicothe Friday night.
Things started off in the right direction for the Cavs. Chillicothe (1-2/2-6) drove to the Chieftains’ 25 yard line, but had a missed exchange which Dean Jordan scooped up and returned to the Cavs’ 9. Two plays later Schmeltzer crossed the goal line for a 6-0 lead.
The Cavs answered with a 68 yard drive. Markel Cain had runs of 13 and 36 yards each and Ryan Mathis hit Christian Collins on a 14 yard pass to tie the game. Jacob Weber’s PAT gave Chillicothe its only lead at 7-6.
The Chieftains regained the lead after getting the ball back early in the second quarter. Logan used a 12 play, nearly six minute long drive, capped by a 1 yard run by Music with 4:40 left in the half.
Logan’s Nick Maniskas returned the second half kick to the Chillicothe 37. Schmeltzer rushed in 8 yards for the score building a 20-7 lead. Schmeltzer found the end zone a final time on a 19 yard run for the 28-7 win. Logan improves to 2-1 in the SEOAL and 2-6 overall.
When things have gone poorly for the Cavs this season, it’s generally been due to losing the turnover battle and injuries to key personnel. Chillicothe experienced both Friday night.
The Cavs lost two fumbles and had an interception on the night. Things got worse when Adam Bixler was forced from the game making a play on Schmeltzer’s second TD. Then Luke Barnes was injured on the two point conversion attempt. Neither returned to the game for Chillicothe.
Cain was the work horse for Chillicothe gaining 82 yards on 15 carries. The Cavs had just 218 yards offense to Logan’s 261.
With the win, Logan evened its series with the Cavs at 7-7.
Chillicothe heads to Jackson (3-0/5-3) Friday. The Ironmen were 35-7 winners at Portsmouth.
Also Friday, Gallia Academy (3-0/6-2) beat Warren (0-3/2-6) 52-21.
