Five years ago next month, Ray Chambers hit the game winning shot in the Chillicothe Cavaliers’ state championship game. This weekend, he’ll be playing his final college games at Troy in Alabama.

Chambers says his Chillicothe memories stay with him. Chambers recently watched the replay of that 2008 DII Championship victory over Toledo Libbey.

“I miss it so much. If I could do it all over again, I’d do it all over again… it was a great moment for me” said Chambers in a phone interview from Alabama.

The Trojans will play in the Sun Belt Conference tournament next weekend, but tonight they’ll face East Division leader Middle Tennessee and South Alabama Saturday for Senior Night. While the 11-18 Trojans are out of the running for the regular season title, he’s hoping to surprise some higher seeds in the tournament.

“That’s what I’m striving for. I’ve been a winner for so long and the Sun Belt Championship means a lot. So, I’m gonna bust my hump and get it done for me and my team.”

After graduation, Chambers played at Cowley College in Kansas, transferred to Lakeland Community College where he averaged nearly 17 points per game. Two seasons ago, he accepted a scholarship and enrolled at Troy. Chambers found himself in a much different setting and style of play.

“Out type of system is a four guard/one post system, a dribble drive set. So, I just play off of my players… it’s a decent offense, it’s not bad.”

The 6’6” Chambers is averaging 7.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game out of his forward position for the Trojans.

Chambers will graduate in July with a degree in Human Resources, but says that’s Plan B. He’s hoping a professional basketball career comes first.

But first, he’s focused on finishing at Troy and hoping to make noise in the Sun Belt Tournament.
